Rafa Benítez’s Liverpool had two spectacular weeks, not just advancing to the next round of the Champion’s League after soundly and devastatingly defeating Real Madrid, but also sparking the soccer world’s interest in the Premier League anew by taking 6 points back from the current leader, Manchester United. With scant matches left till the end of the season, the red fans are now full of hope again thanks to these awesome results. Liverpool managed the unthinkable, defeating Manchester at their legendary stronghold of Old Trafford.
This past 14th of March, Liverpool defeated Manchester United, handing them the worst final score they’d suffered in the last 14 years in the Premier. Astonishingly, given that the dailies considered Manchester’s victory a given, Benitez’s boys scored 4 times via Fernando Torres, Steven Gerard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena. In this fashion they triumphed over the current EuroCup and Premier champion, and recouped 3 points worth gold in the fight for this year’s pennant, leaving them only 4 points behind Manchester United. To complete the fans’ delight, Manchester's next game, against straggler Fulham (currently positioned in the very lower part of the Premier’s ranking), saw them defeated again by 2-0 despite their standing as leaders on the board and having a much better roster. This gave Liverpool even more opportunity to catch up as it went on to face off against Aston Villa, a team valiantly campaigning all season, with good results. Nevertheless, the match was decided in the first half, where Liverpool showed its superior talent by trouncing Aston Villa 5-0 at the hands of its captain, Gerard, and the 3 goals he converted. In this manner Liverpool recouped 6 points in just 2 encounters, leaving Manchester in dire straits. These last two dates make it clear that anything can happen and the Premier is still up for grabs. Liverpool cannot be taken for granted, as it’s going through such a great moment thanks to Benitez’s ‘facelift’, and the owners’ promises to reinforce the team for the next season to the tune of 100 million euros. All on top of a brilliant campaign in the Champion’s League and new Premier hopes, thanks to their win against Manchester, and hard won proximity to the top of the ranking. |
