Why the Premiership?
Written by Andres Javier
PremiershipDespite having UEFA President, Michel Platini, against it (because of the unlimited number of foreign players it allows, versus the limit of three elsewhere, not to mention the players with an EC passport who don't count as foreigners) the Premiership is the tournament with the largest number of fans worldwide. In great part due to the speed of play and the incredible struggle taking place throughout the 90 minutes on the field, resembling not so much a game as an all out medieval battle between two kingdoms fighting for their freedom.

In the last two weeks, soccer fans all over the world enjoyed the knockout round of the Champions League, which despite not being an English championship boasted four teams from this country (Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool) out of eight still in the running. Chelsea, after winning 1-3 in their away game against Liverpool, received the Reds in London where they played one of the best games in the history of the Champions. The match ended in a vibrant 4-4 in which Liverpool fought till the very end for a victory. But the team led by Dutchman Hidink knew how to manage the match and came back from a 2-0 score against them, this being the score at half time. At the start of the second half Chelsea recovered and the battle ended in a draw, with the soccer world in wonder, applauding both teams for their dedication and great play during the 90 minutes.

As if this weren't enough, Liverpool faced off against Arsenal in the Premiership; the game also ending in a 4-4 draw with a truly inspired Arshavin converting all four goals for Arsenal, proving yet again why he is one of the most important Russian players. A great game, even though Liverpool ceded valuable points to leader Manchester United. There can be no doubt that Benitez's team always provides a grand experience and his players hold nothing back. But the most important aspect is the interest in the league thanks to the constant high level of all the teams, even if it's the leader against the straggler we can count on each playing as if it were the Finals, armed to the teeth to deliver a victory to their fans.
