In a move reminiscent of Diego Armando Maradona's "Hand of God" goal in the 1986 FIFA World Cup Quarter Finals, the French team's Thierry Henry has managed to qualify his team to the FIFA 2010 World Cup by playing handball, at the expense of Ireland's team.
While we are aware of the saying that all's fair in love and war, soccer should be held to higher standards. FIFA's refusal to move into the 21st century and allow instant replays to be used by judges, as they are in other sports, e.g. American Football, clearly sets the atmosphere for shameful events like these. |

Raúl González is without a doubt one of the best examples of discipline and great soccer in the world. Playing, as he does, in one of the world's most famous and financially strong teams, Real Madrid, guarantees that his name is always in the spotlight. His abilities on the field speak for themselves, he's a lethal predator when on the offensive who cannot be allowed any openings. He debuted on the 1st of July, 1994, at which time his style was already formidable and deadly when facing the enemy goal posts. Over time he carved out a role for himself in Real Madrid's first string team, where famed strikers of all nationalities have since arrived, but none has been able to sideline him.

David Beckham is a well known soccer player who is playing for AC Milan in the Calcio League. He is a member of the team LA Galaxy in the United States, but the managers of the team allowed him to travel to Italy to continue playing in their winter season, in great part to see if he can recover the playing style that made him famous when he was playing for Manchester United. After the loan period was up, he was to come back (March 2009) for the beginning of the MLS 2009 season. The English player is also known as a money making machine, being a fashion icon and well loved in Asia, making his name very important and good business to the teams he plays in. They'll always try to take advantage of this to sell more shirts with the team logo.

England's Premiere League is without a doubt the league attracting the greatest number of spectators every weekend, due to the high number of foreign players and their superb condition, both physically and technically, in a country that lives and breathes soccer, and thanks to the sponsorship of foreign investors, it has seen its league become the best in the world, surpassing even the Italian and Spanish leagues. This has resulted in the best players in the world joining English teams, seeing as they also become part of the most competitive league on the face of the Earth, and the one that pays the best. But not everything is a bed of roses.

It's true that major league soccer is a business, and as such all involved earn, on top of fame and adulation, salaries that can sustain entire families for several generations. With today's globalization, that allows the most important leagues to be followed on TV regardless of where you are, it's easy to find players of every type that interest not just the fans, but also the managers of the teams that are the most highly ranked and with the proudest history worldwide. |
