Andres EscobarIn an incident that brings back memories of the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Colombian soccer player, Andres Escobar's, death in 1994, an Iraqi soccer player has been killed in the middle of a match. While it was never proven, Escobar's death is still believed by many to have been in retaliation for an own goal he made while the Colombian national team played against the United States team in the 1994 World Cup, costing Colombian drug cartel capos heavy gambling losses in a game that had been thought by everyone to be an easy win for the Colombians.

Benjamin Urrea, The GarabatoAmerica de Cali, arguably one of Colombia's best all-time teams, won the national pennant last night after defeating rival Medellin for the second time in a finals series of two games. Even though America needed just a tie to take the championship, they nonetheless played for keeps and won 3-1. This win comes with a slot for the South American Club championship, the Liberator's Cup (Copa Libertadores de America), to be played next year (2009).
